Candy's Sukiyaki

1-1/2 lbs sirloin steak
2 tablespoons oil
3 tablspoons sugar
1-1/2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms or 1 8-oz can mushrooms, drained
8-oz can water chestnuts, sliced
1/2 teaspoon msg, if desired
2 medium onions, sliced
6-oz can bamboo shoots, drained
2/3 cup water
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 cup green onions, cut into 1-inch pieces
16-oz can bean sprouts, drained

Cut meat into paper-thin slices across grain, then into strips 1-inch wide. (TIP: Freezing meat makes slicing easier.)

Heat oil in wok, and brown meat 2 - 3 minutes. Combine sugar, msg, water and soy sauce in a bowl; pour over meat. Push meat to one side of wok, out of oil. Keeping ingredients separate, add green onions, onion slices, and bamboo shoots. Stir-fry 5 - 10 minutes or until vegetables are crisp-tender. Push vegetables to one side. Add mushrooms, bean sprouts and water chestnuts, still keeping ingredients separate. Cook 2 minutes or until heated through. Serve with steamed rice. 4 servings.
