WELFARE

She didn't have no breeding
Her mind was somewhat lame
Just looking for a handout
I guess Welfare was her name.

Too long, too low, too something . . .
A look of dull despair
A dumpster dog, a hound, a tramp.
No three would make a pair.

And yet, no mean bone in her.
No bones at all, I'd bet
No one could easily take her in
Be rid, without regret.

If she'd been born a Lassie
A Rin Tin Tin, by birth
A Benji, Toto, CLASSIE . . .
Instead of "What on Earth?"

Her fate would be determined
Her life would be a breeze
But she was born a cur, and so
She'll live, and die, with fleas.

The Real "Welfare"

This poem of Marcia's was inspired by this particular dog who showed up at her and her husband's weekend cabin about a week after they'd placed another stray. She was even shabbier than the poem relates . . . apparently nearly starved, making her head somewhat outlandish with her long, bony frame. Of course, Marcia immediately fed her . . . and though they took her into neighborhoods three times (hoping she'd find a home), she kept returning each week to the cabin in the boonies. Consequently, she was named "Boomerang."

Since "Boomer" was so set on being their "River Dog", they bought her an automatic feeder, had her spayed, gave her shots, and introduced her to a similar dog a house away. Now, she and this "best friend" neighbor spend all their time together . . . at their cabin half the week, and at the neighbors' the other half. So she's a "time share" dog. And, of course, she's super, loyal, and very protective.

The images you see here represent our inhumanity to animals. They are our throw-aways that somebody didn't care about. They have been neglected, and in some cases abused. One was shot and left for dead, but rescued by an animal shelter. They would all make wonderful, devoted companions, if given the chance. All they want is to feel appreciated. All they need is a little love.

Animal overpopulation is a big problem. Owners often do not take proper care and responsibility for their pets. If you want a pet to give a nice home to, please consider visiting your local animal shelter. You will find some of the littlest friends with some of the biggest hearts. And, as these babies would say, "PLEASE spay or neuter your pet."
