George Gershwin
George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York
to Jewish immigrant parents on
September 26, 1898.
He developed a love for music
at a very early age, and went on
to become one of the most dynamic and
influential composers of our time.
His music crossed over many lines,
and today you can find his music listed
under many different genres...
classical, jazz, show tunes, pop.
His music influenced many people of
all cultures and all walks of life.
As a person, he knew not prejudice nor
cultural boundaries.
He loved music, regardless of genre
for the way it touched the heart.
He was full of passion and soul.
Gershwin wrote everything from love songs
to theme songs to complete scores,
concertos and symphonies.
Among his most famous works were
"An American In Paris," "Concerto in F,"
the score for "Porgy and Bess,"
"S'Wonderful," "I Got Rhythm,"
"Our Love Is Here To Stay," sung by
many artists including my favorite,
Billie Holiday, "Someone To Watch Over Me,"
a song very near and dear to my heart,
and of course, the magnificent
"Rhapsody in Blue."
George Gershwin died a very tragic and
untimely death, from a brain tumor, on
July 11, 1937. Just 38 years old.
The world was robbed of all of the music
still living in his heart
which never got down on paper.
But because of the miracle of media
and technology, he still lives on...
and this year marks his 100th birthday.
I honor him with this small tribute.
