From This Moment On
Writers, poets, songwriters, screenwriters, and philosophers have written
about the subject of love more than any other. There are more cliches
about love than anyone can possibly know of. The reasons are simple.
Love is the substance of our very being. We and all things are of God,
God is Love, and therefore we are also of Love. Disraeli wrote "We are
all born for love...it is the principle of existence and its only end." The
question then is what exactly is love?
My favorite definition of love is Swedenborg's..."Love in its essence is
spiritual fire." It is the one that to me says it all. Real love has
all the elements of selflessness and commitment. It is the heartfelt
desire for the one loved to know happiness, peace, contentment, and to
feel loved. It is the promise that the love given will protect, nurture,
honor, and endure. When the love is equally balanced between two people,
it is magic. One look, one touch, one kiss from the one loved makes the
lover the happiest human being alive.
Kahlil Gibran defines marriage as "strings that quiver with the same
music." His was a very noble and spiritual idea of love and marriage.
His words from "The Prophet" should be read and absorbed and taken to
heart by all people married and contemplating marriage:
You were born together and together you shall be forever
more;
you shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your
days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your
souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup
The woman's love binds her spirit to that of her husband;
she pours her love into his heart,
and the two become one member in the body of life
and one word on the lips of God.
The unity of marriage binds two persons in a single divine
spirit
in the two human bodies made beautiful by youth and clothed in
unison,
protected by God from the anger and blame of people,
with complete and perfect understanding arising from their
transparent faces lighted by purity.
Created for and dedicated to my darling
Ray,
our love for each other and our future
I truly love you
